Hollywood has tried everything to pull you into theaters for its summer fare: CGI explosions, schlocky comedies, and, sigh, trotting out the franchise flicks.
The only sequel we’re interested in is the Marquez-Diaz II slugfest. Last year, the throwdown between Houston’s Juan Diaz and the elder Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico City earned accolades as fight of the year from ESPN and Ring Magazine. The two powerful lightweights traded blows pretty evenly until Marquez’s precision handiwork yielded a TKO in the final minute of the ninth round in Diaz’s hometown.
Marquez-Diaz II goes down at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino, but is being broadcast at six movie theaters around the Valley, including AMC Esplanade 14 and AMC Ahwatukee 24. For location details, check out www.phoenixnewtimes.com.
