DNA Extractor Probe? Slimy Slim? Regurgitating Ralph? These are the names of creatures you do not want hiding in your closet, let alone living under your bed.
Featuring new work by Phoenix-based artist Nervis Wrek and San Francisco-based artist Jay222, “Home Grown Monsters” is a freak fest of toy sculptures with mutant misgivings. Inspired by horror movies, comics, and urban art, the two monster molders start with Munny dolls (vinyl toys designed and produced by retailer Kidrobot), then sculpt, mutilate, and transform them into creature carvings of both twisted humor and gross-out goodness.
On display and up for grabs are 12 to 15 custom figures from each artist and one collaborative piece. Bag Nervis Wrek’s fang-ridden Big Jaw for $125 or latch on to Jay222’s Lazy Larry, a fleshy red freak holding a remote control and a half-eaten drumstick, for $200.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: May 13. Continues through May 30, 2010
