Times are dark, people. An old Chinese proverb advises that it’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. So quit cursing and see a wee, warm exhibition on Roosevelt Row called “Soot: Handmade Candle Caddies.”
Alex Ozers, who has a piece in the show, says his riveted copper and brass tea light vessel “is meant to look like a tiny campfire.” And it does. Says Ozers, “The texture process involves bludgeoning the metal against real salvaged steel [and] the resulting texture is sort of a reflection of the steel’s rust and wear.”
Metalsmith Tedd Mcdonah’s steel-pillar stand is the show’s largest. It’s hand-forged and shaped using traditional blacksmithing methods. Also be sure to check out John Ebinger’s elegant candleholder that’s a mesquite, maple and walnut sculpture that’s conceptually basic and totally lovely.
