For more than 30 years, something’s been missing in the downtown indie film scene: namely, an indie theater. And one that serves adult beverages? Don’t Pink our Flamingos.
All that changes today with the Grand Opening of FilmBar, an art-house cinema with a bar to boot. With a focus on independent, foreign, and experimental films, as well as cult classics like Rocky Horror Picture Show, the 21-and-over venue called bullshit on the “sheet on the wall” approach, opting for a one-screen “microcinema” featuring comfy seating and state-of-the-art digital projection for up to 80 indie film fans. An adjoining lounge will serve beer, wine, coffee, sodas, and snacks that can be consumed pre- or post-film, or taken into the theater.
FilmBar’s opening night features will include the wildly outrageous 2010 Danish documentary The Red Chapel and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis: The Complete Restoration, the 1927 silent-film classic newly restored with several minutes of missing footage.
Toast the opening of downtown’s only indie theater with a screening of The Red Chapel at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Metropolis, at 10 p.m.
