In the world of dance companies, a lot has changed since Swan Lake’s premiered in 1877. Innovative styles (such as modern) have forced stylistic reimagining. The rise of television has inspired inventive costumes and striking special effects. And as audiences crave more realistic storylines, performance material has veered toward more provocative and serious subjects.
Evidence of that evolution will be apparent as Center Dance Ensemble performs Frances Smith Cohen’s The Attic, based on The Diary of Anne Frank, with guest troupes CONDER/dance, Desert Dance Theater, and Dahl House dance productions.
Cohen is Center Dance’s artistic director, leading the Herberger Theater’s resident dance group in pirouetting en pointe since founding the organization in 1988.
