With the zeitgeist celebrating any and all things EDM, trance has sort of fallen by the wayside in favor of more fashionable electro-house and dubstep.
Europeans still go bonkers for the heart-pounding haywire style, born in German clubs in the early 1990s and championed by Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyk. In the States, however, its popularity has dipped, thanks to the capricious nature and A.D.D. of American EDM fans.
This hasn’t slowed down the globetrotting career of DJ/producer Christopher Lawrence, who’s been carrying the trance torch for decades. Widely considered one of the genre’s preeminent practitioners, he’s scored a slew of honors over the past few years (including being named the top turntablist in the world by DJ magazine in 2009) based on his frenetic, mind-bending trance mixes.
In case you missed Lawrence’s stellar set at Wet Electric earlier this summer, he’ll pay a visit to the Monarch Theatre, 122 East Washington Street, on Saturday, July 21, for the latest edition of Relentless Beats’ weekly, Basic.
