It’d be pretty easy for sports fans to slouch into the doldrums of summer right about now. No NFL, no NBA, no NHL, and — as the Diamondbacks bleed out the remainder of a disappointing season — not much MLB either. Well, before spiraling into a sports fandom identity crisis, consider that the Phoenix Mercury are in the midst of one of the greatest regular seasons in WNBA history. Not franchise history, league history.

With ageless all-star Diana Taurasi and shot swatting juggernaut (swatternaut?) Brittney Griner at the helm, the Mercury are sitting high atop the league standings, with only the formidable Minnesota Lynx even visible in the rear-view. And it’s those pesky Lynx, led by MVP frontrunner Maya Moore, who have had Phoenix’s number in recent years. But this year the Merc are better, way better. See for yourself when they host the Lynx at U.S. Airways Center, 201 East
