To paraphrase the great Cleveland Indians coach Lou Brown: “We won a game yesterday. If we win one today, that’s two in a row. If we win one tomorrow, that’s called a ‘winning streak.’” So what’s it called, then, when you win 16 in a row? You’ll have to ask the Phoenix Mercury, who went collectively bonkers in June and July, knocking down 16 consecutive opponents during the second-longest win streak in WNBA history. The only streak longer, 18 wins, was set way back in 2001 by the Los Angeles Sparks – who, as fate would have it, are taking on the league-leading Mercury in their last home game before the start of the WNBA playoffs on August 21. This battle of the streakers tips off at 7 p.m. Saturday, August 16, at the US Airways Center, 201 East Jefferson Street in Phoenix. Tickets start at $12. Call 602-252-WNBA or visit www.wnba.com/mercury for more.
