Far Side comic author Gary Larson once confessed that his “Cow Tools” drawing caused the most consternation among the public as readers were unable to decipher the exact meaning of the cartoon showing a cow standing in front a row or strange looking “tools.” Why all the fuss? Larson never figured it out. Such an uproar shouldn’t occur during the Tempe Public Library’s presentation of “Spectacular Nature: Prehistoric Tools,” though there will be some rather unusual tools and devices not easily recognizable. Nonetheless, the event focuses on tools and weapons dating back to the Stone, Bronze, and Iron ages. The evolution of these objects will be obvious and interesting when pondering the development and then-present mindset that went forth in such developments. Tens of thousands of years of human ingenuity and technological development — often based on sheer survival instincts — leaves a lot to think about.
