If you’d always wanted to play with the foods growing in and around our Sonoran desert like prickly pear and mesquite, there is an event tonight to jump-start your inspired kitchen. Changing Hands Bookstore is hosting a panel discussion and book signing led by Edible Phoenix Magazine tonight at 7 p.m. featuring the cookbook authors of two new Southwest cookbooks. Carolyn Niethammer author of Cooking the Wild Southwest and Marilyn Noble author of Southwest Comfort Food: Slow and Savory will be discussing “how to stretch your dollars at the farmers market, how to source locally-produced grassfed meats, and how to make the most of the desert’s bounty.”
Cooking the Wild Southwest features 23 native plants and how to prepare them at home. The book includes how to harvest and Paul Mirocha’s finely drawn illustrations of the various southwestern plants. Southwest Comfort Food contains over 100 recipes with smoke and spice that also make you feel warm and cozy.
