With the holidays in full swing, there’s lots of reasons to celebrate. But for the locally owned Duck and Decanter, better known as the Duck, there’s one more: Its 40th Anniversary.
From 1 to 6 p.m., this Saturday, November 24, the legendary spot of stellar sandwiches is inviting its guests to join them at their Camelback location for a 40th anniversary party.
And given the Duck’s rather turbulent history, 40 years in business is truly something to be thankful for.
Started in November of 1972 courtesy of Dort and Earl Mettler, The Duck, originally located on Camelback Road just east of 16th Street in East Phoenix, served up sandwiches, salads, and soups in addition to selling market items such as cheeses, wine, coffee, and teas. In the 1980s, the Duck opened and closed additional locations in Scottsdale,Tempe, and in the Carriage House at Heritage Square as well as having its original location rebuilt just south of its Camelback address.

After reorganizing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the early 90s, the Duck moved its failing downtown Financial Center location, opened in 1987, to the National Bank Plaza (where it remains today), and in 2002, expanded into Copper Square at the Phelps Dodge Tower.
Raising a glass to the always-changing times, the Duck’s 40th Anniversary party will feature live music, food, a beer and wine tasting, contests, and raffles.
