Excepting the Rocky series – blah! – we think underdog movies rule. Seabiscuit, Hoop Dreams, The Karate Kid, The Breakfast Club, The Bad News Bears, Dodgeball, The Shawshank Redemption . . .

Obviously, then, our palates are primed for Bottle Shock, a fresh indie that sounds like a cross between Sideways and Rudy. Featuring familiar names like Alan Rickman, Bill Pullman, and Rachael Taylor, the flick tells the true story of Gustavo Brambila, a Napa nobody whose Chardonnay trumped those of the major-league winos at the 1976 Judgment of Paris blind tasting.

A wine reception precedes at 6:30 at nearby Fire Sky Resort & Spa, 4925 South Scottsdale Road. The cost for both is $55. Call 480-551-9769 or see www.localwineevents.com.
