If you’re Downtown around lunchtime, take a trip up (or down) Central Avenue — today marks the annual Summer Solstice, and from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Burton Barr Central Avenue will put on its once-a-year show.
The building, design by Will Bruder, includes a 32-foot high “Floating Ceiling” that’s suspended by cables over the Great Reading Room of 43,000 square feet on the fifth floor. Along the east and west walls are 6-inch by 300-foot skylights that, together with the building’s round skylights create an illusion of flames around noon every Summer Solstice.
According to library employees, Bruder will talk around 12:15 p.m. about building’s features that create the visual effects.
