Jeff Biggers is a lot of things. Author, journalist, and historian all apply — Northern Arizona Book Festival founder and playwright, too. One thing the man isn’t: a stranger to controversy.

Splitting his time between Tucson and Illinois, the writer’s made a name for himself delving into gritty, surprising, and controversial slices of America, from the evolution of Appalachian culture to the veritable political minefield and federal nightmare that is Arizona.

Not so coincidentally, Arizona serves as the chief subject of his latest book, State Out of the Union: Arizona and the Final Showdown Over the American Dream ($25.99), which he’ll bring to Changing Hands this evening (Monday, October 1) at 7 p.m.

In the book, Biggers contends that the Copper State’s powerful Tea Party faction has driven a wedge between the state and the federal government through a bevy of hotly contested legislation, including Senate Bill 1070.

Decisions defying federal laws pertaining to firearms, Medicaid, and deferred deportation are among the affronts Biggers notes are damaging, to not only Arizona, but ultimately the country as a whole.

Biggers will sign and discuss State Out of the Union tonight. Admission is free with book purchase.
