Deborah Sussman announced this week that she’ll be unpacking a few boxes in Tempe; starting Monday, she’ll be joining ASU Art Museum as a public relations specialist.

Sussman (who, full disclosure, has freelanced for New Times) was with the Jewish News of Greater Phoenix, where she was an associate editor, reporter and opinions writer.
“As cliche as it might sound, I’m really looking forward to the challenge,” says Sussman. “There’s a great potential to involve the community that’s around the museum … people need to know that the museum is there, it’s great and it’s free.”

Sussman’s known for her involvement within the local arts community. She’s one of the founding members of Collective Gesture (an online community of artists, curators, and writers), she’s written literary and art criticism for local and national publications including New York Times, Washington Post, and she created “My Art Detour,” an original comic with artist Jon Haddock for New Times in 2007.
Most recently, she posted dispatches from Sydney, Australia during the Sydney Biennale in May. Sussman also teaches writing art and design criticism for ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.
Her upcoming projects at the ASU Art Museum will undoubtedly include promoting current exhibitions by Brent Green and Karen Karnes as well as its current, community-wide installation series, Open for Business.
