The music section in week’s print edition of Phoenix New Times is heavy on the metal.

Why shouldn’t it be, what with The Big 4 festival featuring Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax going down just a short drive away in Indio, California this weekend. In honor the the occasion I penned a column about why Megadeth singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine should be considered metal’s MVP. Check it out here.

In local metal news, Mike Meyer caught up with The Artifact before their CD release show at The Clubhouse this weekend. Seems like a big venue, but consider that the band rose from the ashes of IWATCHEDHERDIE, one of the local scene’s standout metal acts.

Also in this week’s issue we’ve got short previews of shows by Amon Amarth, Joe Purdy, Chickstock, Railroad Revival Tour, Steelheart and U-Fest.
