On the day shortstop Stephen Drew returned to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ lineup Wednesday after missing nearly a year, the D-Backs lost their second straight game to the Atlanta Braves.
Wednesday’s 6-4 loss dropped the D-Backs back to .500 on the season (37-37), as Drew went 1-for-4 in his 2012 debut and Ryan Roberts hit a seventh-inning three-run homer to help the D-Backs attempt to claw their way out of 6-0 hole. But three Braves relievers shut down the D-Backs the rest of the way.
Starting pitcher Trevor Cahill went only five innings, giving up six runs on four hits and four ugly walks — three of which led to a three-run fifth inning for the Braves, which broke the game open.
Tonight, the D-Backs will attempt to salvage the series with 4:10 start in Atlanta. The D-Backs’ top prospect, Trevor Bauer, will make his major-league debut against recently recalled onetime all-star Jair Jurrjens. Bauer posted a 2.23 earned-run average in his short stints in double-A and triple-A ball. He also struck out a whopping 116 batters in just 93 innings.
