Gotta love the Major League baseball debut last night of onetime ASU All-American first baseman and pitcher Ike Davis.
Called up just hours earlier from Triple-A Buffalo, the 23-year-old Davis looped a single to right in his first big-league at bat, and then collected another hit in the New York Mets win over the Chicago Cubs.
Seems like yesterday that the lanky Davis was dominating at Scottsdale Chaparral High School, before kicking butt for three years under former Sun Devils Coach Pat Murphy.
To be honest, we were surprised when the Mets selected Davis as the 18th player in the 2008 draft.
That seemed a bit high, but what do we know?
We got to know the kid during our 2006 profile of Coach Murphy and thought he was a terrific team guy with a keen sense of humor and a true love for the game.
Here’s hoping he’s ready for the Bigs at such a relatively tender age.
