Flagstaff police have identified the man who died after he was hit by a train last week.

The victim: 47-year-old Johnnie Augustine.

Witnesses told police that Augustine probably was drunk when he tried to run across train tracks as a train was approaching.

The Flagstaff Police Department says Augustine was walking southbound near the tracks last Thursday night as the train approached.

The crossing arms came down to block the road as the train got closer, but Augustine apparently thought he could cross the tracks before the train reached him. Only, he couldn’t.

While trying to beat the train, the man was hit in what witnesses called “a glancing blow.”

His body ricocheted off the train and landed on the south side of the tracks.
