Soaking your feet in a bucket of fish that want to nibble your dead skin is supposed to be relaxing.
But the treatment — currently being performed at Cindy Vong’s LaVie Nails & Spa in Gilbert — has created tension with the bureaucrats at the state Board of Cosmetology. According to this news-of-the-weird article today by David Woodfill of the East Valley Tribune, the cosmetology board is worried someone will get sick from the fish, somehow, and is considering banning the practice. Board members are scheduled to meet with the owner on March 20 to let her know what they’ve decided to do.
Without proof that these “doctor fish” and their flesh-eating service has ever hurt anyone, it’s hard to imagine why the state would want to throw back Vong’s entrepreneurial idea. “Fish pedicures” are supposedly popular in Asia, and Vong claims that offering the treatments has boosted business.
