While the Suns, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, and Coyotes dominate the sports headlines around town, one team actually is a proven winner.

Yes, we’re talking about the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA.

While they may not get the attention they deserve, they were honored by President Barack Obama yesterday for winning the WNBA title last season.

The team finished the 2009 season with a 30-15 record. Guard Diana Taurasi (pictured left, with now-traded Cappie Pondexter) was named MVP of both the regular season and the finals.

After meeting with Obama, a big-time basketball fan himself, the Mercury participated in a community-service event with the First Lady Michelle Obama.

The Mercury won the championship last season after beating the Indiana Fever in a five-game series.
