A Phoenix man who pleaded guilty to murdering his 5-year-old son was sentenced to life in prison this morning.

Nashawn Campbell, 39, pled guilty last month to murdering his son, Troy, in June of 2009. The plea agreement spared him the possibility of the death penalty.

According to court documents dug up by 3TV, Campbell’s sister told police that at the time of the murder he “had been depressed about losing his job.” She also said he had threatened to “end it all and take Troy with him.”

That’s apparently what he tried to do.

Campbell and his dead son were discovered by his sister in their home around 15th and Fillmore Streets in Phoenix — both of their throats were slit and the boy was already dead.

Campbell had killed his son and attempted to kill himself — only he failed.

While in the hospital, court docs reveal that he told the officer guarding him “you should have let me die.”
