As a huge audience in the Valley watched the Phoenix Suns top the Los Angeles Lakers last night to tie their increasingly interesting series at two games apiece, our Arizona Diamondbacks quietly lost a tight one to the Colorado Rockies up in Denver by a count of 3-2.
We snuck enough peeks at the baseball game to tell you this:
In the stop-the-presses category, Arizona’s awful bullpen did fine, though the two relief pitchers never had a lead to try to hold.
Another solid effort from Arizona’s starting pitcher Ian Kennedy went for naught because the D-Backs couldn’t string together a strong inning offensively.
Arizona did fight back in the late innings from a 3-0 deficit, but Mark Reynolds struck out with Stephen Drew on second base to end the game.
The loss dropped the team ever deeper into last place in the NL West, now 7 1/2 games behind league-leading San Diego, so far the biggest surprise in all of Major-League Baseball.
The teams resume their series at 5:40 tonight at Coors Field. It’s the second in a nine-game road trip for the beleaguered boys.
The game will be televised on Channel 34, with radio airplay on KTAR-AM (620) and KSUN-AM (1400).
On another note, we’re happy to see that scrappy utility dude Robin Roberts got called up from Triple-A after the recent injury to Tony Abreu. Roberts did a lot for the D-Backs last season, and we hope he makes the most of his time back in the bigs.
