When we last put the spotlight on 100 creative forces in Phoenix, it was no secret there were more than 100 individuals who were making waves in the local arts community. So as we count down to our annual Best of Phoenix issue, we’re profiling 100 more. Welcome (back) to 100 Creatives
Mikey Jackson was born in Seoul, South Korea and says he bounced around Japan, Hawaii, and California for a while before landing in Phoenix and made a go for it in the arts community.
“I’ve always had a creative urge to doodle and make things with my hands, but it wasn’t until a couple years ago I decided to focus on art a bit more seriously,” he says.
I came to Phoenix with . . . my family in the summer of ’95. it was really effing hot.

I make art because . . . I have a hole in me that I must fill with creativity. Plus I’d have no idea what to do with myself and my thoughts. Visual art helps me to express how i feel and all that jazz. I’m terrible with…umm..words.
I’m most productive when . . . I’m working on multiple projects. I walk away from things and come back to them quite often. It’s like productive procrastination, I guess.
My inspiration wall is full of . . . magazine pages, photos, drawings, feathers, and the occasional quote.
I’ve learned the most from . . . being open to making mistakes and learning from them. This has helped me to be more confident in my work.
Good work should always . . . be authentic. Jim Jarmusch says, “Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows.” I really like that.
The Phoenix creative scene could use . . . more events to meet other artists. It’s interesting to know who’s doing what.
