On a 10th grade, overnight speech club field trip, my little cadre of nerd buddies hunkered down in our cramped hotel room and proceeded to debate the strength of the Star Trek universe against the firepower of the Jedi and the Empire combined.
Although we never came to a definitive conclusion, I look back on that night as one of the only instances, in a lifetime of nerd-dom, when I’ve actually wanted to give myself a swirly.
Now the debate from time immemorial has moved from angry, keyboard-pounding missives into (eek) the light of day with the N.E.R.D.S. winner take all Star Wars v. Star Trek grudge match at The Royale next weekend.
From the storytelling abilities of Roddenberry vs. Lucas to the computing power of Three-Pio vs. Data, I’m certain that believers in both properties’ expanded universes will bring up some very salient points.
Truly, I don’t have a horse (or a tauntaun) in this race. I’ll be on hand as a spectator only. However, I’d like to submit the following if only to contribute to the discourse:
When news happens, Phoenix New Times is there —
Your support strengthens our coverage.
We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to you. If New Times matters to you, please take action and contribute today, so when news happens, our reporters can be there.
Plus the first person to and tell me why this beautiful piece of fan film is completely ironic will score themselves a high five and a couple stickers at the show. (Share your thoughts in the comment section below).
Choose your side and watch the good hearted Nerd Rage unfold in front of your very eyes on November 26 at 1 p.m.
Update: The Royale has confirmed that they maintain strong anti-swirly policy – so we’ll all be in a safe place. See you then.
