Do you know a person or a business who cares about the human condition? Arizona Humanities, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is accepting nominations for three humanities awards that will recognize outstanding contributions in 2014.

All three awards are intended to recognize a person or organization that has helped to promote the humanities in a community setting. According to Arizona Humanities, the humanities are defined as anything that “helps us explore the human experience and how we relate to one another. Through the humanities we examine our past and most importantly develop better ways to create a just and civil society for the future.”
Have someone in mind? See which of the three awards would be the best fit: The Dan Shilling Public Humanities Scholar Award recognizes a scholar; the Juliana Yoder Friend of the Humanities Award recognizes individuals, organizations, or businesses; and the Humanities Rising Star Award recognizes a young professional, student, or volunteer.

Last year’s Humanities Award winners were: Gail Browne, Director, Helen S. Schaefer Poetry Center at the University of Arizona; Dr. Gloria H. Cuádraz, Associate Professor in the School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies, New College at Arizona State University, Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation; Myrlin Hepworth, Director of Phonetic Spit; and Jaclyn Roessel, Director of Education at the Heard Museum.
