Okay, so I admit this blog is way under the gun (the deadline for this call to artists is August 3rd) but I just wouldn’t feel right about life if I didn’t at least mention it.
And, since the applicants are artists, I figure working under pressure at the last minute will only benefit the creative process. There’s nothing like the tick, tick, tick of a pressure timer to promote inspiration.
This call to artists is for a public art piece destined for the Evelyn Hallman Park. Formerly known as Canal Park, it’s located on the SW corner of McKellips and College, stretches a whopping 40 acres and lies just East of the Papago Buttes.
In this instance, “park” does not refer to a soppy, steaming grass field with monkey bars and a sand pit. No, this is a desert park complete with natural Upper Sonoran Desert vegetation – Palo Verde trees, Saguaro Cactus and Creosote bushes galore. Of course, the land has its fair share of desert wildlife and a man-made lake that is one of the Valley’s best fishing destinations. And because it’s so close to the Phoenix Zoo, there are days when visitors can see the neighboring Big Horn sheep on the crest of the Buttes.
