Now that Martin Cizmar has baited me to respond to his blog (he’s good at that, isn’t he?) about the Swell Season mural, I’ll go ahead and let everyone know that I actually really like it.
Surprised?
You shouldn’t be. Even though I can be critical from time to time, I make a careful effort to be fair and give credit where credit is due.
Speaking of credit, I’d like to clear something up here: never, not once, did I bad-mouth the idea for this mural. In fact, in my original post, I applauded the project (4th paragraph, if you’re interested). I simply thought the result was an eyesore. So everyone who thinks I’m “not supportive enough” can stop snotty-crying now.

And I absolutely applaud Joe Pagac’s latest mural promoting the Swell Season show on November 17th at the Mesa Arts Center.
I mentioned the Monsters of Folk mural would be painted over this past First Friday and was thrilled to see the results when I drove by on Saturday morning. Pagac really did a tremendous job. And I figured he would because the works displayed on his website are very well done.
In fact, in my original Monsters of Folk blog I, ahem, gave him credit for his previous work (5th paragraph).
Anyway, back to the Swell Season mural. If you took all my criticisms from before and turned them around, that’s what I think of this one. Pagac employs good organization of the large space, excellent color scheme, consistent rendering and style of the figures and clean lettering. Overall, it just looks way better.
Now, before you tear me to shreds in the comments section, you may want to reread this and make sure you understand all the points I’m making. Just a suggestion.
And now that I’ve sufficiently jabbed at the people who bashed me in the comments section, I’d like to point out that some people who commented agreed with me.
Looks like Phoenix asked for more. And what do you know? We got it.
