The art of dance has progressed many a step since the days of Fred Astaire, but no matter how dazzling the choreography becomes, America will always have a sweet spot for a well executed Charleston. That is why Dancing With The Bars has become one of Phoenix’s most anticipated annual events. Modeled after ABC’s Dancing With The Stars, the groovy gala pairs prominent bartenders, bar owners, and local LGBT celebs with professional rug-cutters to compete in an ol’ fashioned dance contest.
Your $20 admission won’t get you a ballerina’s graceful jetè, especially not when drag darlings Barbra SeVille and Pussy LeHoot take the stage inside Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel, 50 East Adams Street. Instead, your money will buy plenty of fabulousness and perhaps a little derrière on Sunday, July 22, at 5 p.m. As in years past, the competition isn’t merely a raucous gayborhood dance-off, it’s a fundraiser for select valley charities, and this year’s beneficiary is the Joshua Tree Feeding Program.
