On Tuesday, September 2, Mary Stephens is putting on a special Banned Plays reading of Kia Corthron’s Force Continuum at Phoenix Center for the Arts. The play, which will be performed by Arizona State University alumni and staff as well as other members of the community, is being read for one night only in direct response to the recent turmoil following the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.

“I’ve been concerned as a culture leader that our artistic community and our cultural community hasn’t really come out and made any real show,” Stephens says. “We’ve had protests and we’ve had public dialogue but our artistic community largely hasn’t made a cultural response to that. So I thought this is exactly what Banned Plays wants and is supposed to do… respond through plays, through theater, to critical issues that we’re facing.”
