Photographer Scott Baxter has spent the last few years visiting 100 Arizona ranchers whose families have been in the industry for 100 years or more. He’s been taking notes and large-format, black-and-white photographs while on the road (and often on the back of a horse) since 2004.
Baxter has been a professional photographer for more than 25 years. He hopes to capture each ranch’s history and lifestyle before it’s lost to development or poor economy through the exhibition “100 Years / 100 Ranchers,” which showed in Terminal Four at Sky Harbor, Wickenburg’s Desert Caballeros Western Art Museum and the Tucson Museum of Art, and now Scottsdale Civic Center Library Gallery, 3839 North Drinktwater Boulevard.
“My goal is to recognize these families that have struggled to survive and persevere in these difficult times,” Baxter writes. “As ranches are lost to developers and poor economic conditions, I hope to be able to preserve, with this project, an integral part of Arizona’s traditions.”
Mondays-Thursdays, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sundays, 1-5 p.m. Starts: Oct. 22. Continues through Jan. 20, 2012
