All great flamenco is about duende, the spiritual connection between a dancer, the music and the audience. And though it’s traditionally enjoyed in a casual, spontaneous setting known as a jugera, a more formal celebration of flamenco will bring some of the world’s best-known artists to the Valley this week.
Lluvia Flamenca is Arizona’s first flamenco celebration with international artists coming together to share one of humanity’s cultural treasures. Participants will include Juncal Street, a medley of performers who blend contemporary urban dance styles and traditional flamenco to pay homage to Andalusian and Gypsy life. They’ll be joined by the CBJ Flamenco Ensemble and Phoenix-based Flamenco Por La Vida. From Tucson comes Flamenco del Pueblo Viejo, a performance group presenting authentic Andalusian Gypsy flamenco dance and music, as well as Yumi La Rosa Student Company of Phoenix.
