Crafting gets a bad rap. While someone labeled as craftsperson might make gorgeous wood cabinets or exotic metal jewelry, people hear the word “craft” and immediately jump to conclusions involving doilies, glue guns, and popsicle sticks — you know, shit you made in third grade summer camp.

Phoenix’s leading craft guild will prove those crude assumptions wrong at the “Arizona Designer Craftsmen 50th Anniversary Juried Exhibition.” The exhibit, judged by curator Patty Haberman, features contemporary works by fifty artists, including sculptural metal art by Tucson’s Danielle Embry; funky jewelry by Rameen Ahmed; and a shiny, twisted wood sculpture by Kerry Vesper of Mesa. The artists judged “Best in Show” take home bragging rights and cash prizes.

Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: June 12. Continues through Aug. 8, 2010
