There’s nothing dingy about Canadian songwriter Claire Boucher. In fact, the 23-year-old singer/producer who performs under the moniker Grimes has a deliberate untidiness about her that makes her all the more alluring. The budding electro-diva, who describes her sound as post-Internet, is panning out to be quite prolific, too. Since her emergence from Montreal’s electronic scene in 2010 she has churned out a couple of EP’s and two stellar full length albums, the latest of which, Visions, hit shelves a couple weeks ago.
While Grimes’ material fits rather snugly into the ever-expanding genre of electronic music, there’s more than enough innovation, particularly in Boucher’s vocal experimentation, to appease the most captious of audiophiles. With just enough of an anti-pop sensibility to lend equal parts savior and saboteur, Grimes juxtaposes the diatonically sublime with the atmospherically subversive. Lovely? Yes. Grimy? No way.
