SAT 6/11
During opening day for the Mesa Miners, one of eight teams in the brand-spanking-new Golden Baseball League, 3,500 spectators turned prospectors waved makeshift pickaxes made out of foam fingers and aluminum cans to celebrate a historic win. It was mass hysteria! Pure bedlam! Okay, maybe the pickax thing is an embellishment. Regardless, the fans do keep on a-coming. On Saturday, June 11, the Miners will square off against the Fullerton Flyers in doubleheader action, beginning at 6 p.m. at HoHoKam Park, 1235 North Center in Mesa. Every Saturday is family night, where $24 buys four tickets (good for admission to both contests), four hot dogs, and four Cokes.

Starting third baseman Michael Done, who was a member of the Baltimore Orioles organization for three years, says, “Playing for the Miners allows me to continue with pro baseball in order to reach an affiliated team.” Call 480-396-4637 or visit www.mesaminers.com. — Steve Jansen
