Every year the East Valley transforms into a fantasy mecca with the CopperCon science fiction convention, presented by the Central Arizona Speculative Fiction Society. This weekend’s CopperCon: Revolution gives serious fans of sci-fi and fantasy literature an opportunity to embrace their passion with workshops and autograph signings.
Catch the CopperCon Film Festival at 8 p.m. Thursday. It features a variety of sci-fi shorts and is free to the public. Fans of the CW’s Arrow should enjoy a panel with writer and artist Mike Grell, responsible for reinventing the Green Arrow in the mid-1980s. Other conversations include “Zombies — Fast vs. Slow,” declaring slow zombies the ideal undead, and AZ Women Cartoonists, featuring Trina Robbins, author of It Ain’t Me, Babe, the first all-woman comic book.
Get your geek on daily from Thursday, August 8, through Sunday, August 11, at the Windemere Hotel, 5750 East Main Street in Mesa. Adult membership passes for the weekend are $45. Single day passes are also available for $20 (Friday and Sunday) or $30 for Saturday. Youth discounts are available, and children under six get in free. Visit www.casfs.org.
