The field of golden sunflowers that usually fills a vacant lot in downtown Phoenix may be cleared, but its impact on the community continues through the Valley of the Sunflowers Paper Project, an art and sustainability project headed by local artists and papermakers.

Through a complicated process that spanned more than eight months, papermakers Dana Lemoine, Rachel Nore, and Kerri Harding collected and processed plant material from the leftover sunflower stalks to make paper. That trio then donated the paper to nearly two dozen local artists, including Kenneth Barrett, Caroline Battle, Peter Bugg, and Candy Caldwell. Each artist took the paper to create a piece of art related to the theme of sustainability.
