Fifty years is nothing to sniff at, and for Gammage Auditorium’s half-century anniversary it’ll indulge the senses.
Since opening, Gammage has hosted hundreds of shows running the gamut from Wicked to Wilco and Eugene Ormandy to Martha Graham Dance Company. As a look back at that performing arts legacy, ASU’s school of music will present Salute to ASU at Gammage on Tuesday, September 23. The evening’s program will draw directly from the music played at the 1964 dedication of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed venue (which also stands as the architect’s last public commissioned work). The Jazz Band and Wind Orchestra will perform pieces by leading American composers, while the ASU Symphony Orchestra will collaborate with the music school’s choirs to play selections by Bach, Strauss, and Beethoven that The Philadelphia Orchestra played those five decades ago.
