Brelby Theatre Company’s known for putting on (and often premièring) plays that are offbeat – if not unknown – such as She Kills Monsters, a comedy centered on Dungeons and Dragons, and David Mamet’s Revenge of the Space Pandas. That’s why it came as a bit of a surprise to us when the Glendale troupe announced it would mount a staging of the off-Broadway hit musical Little Shop of Horrors.
Starring a nerdy florist and a singing venus flytrap that enjoys eating humans, the dark comedy’s certainly in line with Brelby’s typically weird programming, despite being more well-known than the theater’s average presentation. The bizarre source material by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman surely will be subjected to added quirks in the hands of director and Brelby founder Shelby Maticic. And that makes us all the more intrigued.
Little Shop of Horrors opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 22, at 6835 North 58th Avenue. Opening night tickets are $30 and include admission to both the performance and a gala that immediately follows the show.
