It used to be that fixed gear bikes were exclusive to velodrome racing or specialized street training. But these days the two-wheelers are all the rage, with a fervent fan-base in the college set, who aren’t opposed to having their legs do double duty as engine and brakes.
Tempe-based fixie manufacturer State Bicycle Co., in conjunction with AZ Fixed, will host the second of four races in its Roller Sprint Series at Tempe Tavern.
“It’s a stand-still drag race on a bicycle,” says Adam Mayo, State Bicycle’s customer service manager. Riders mount stationary fixed gear bikes with their rear wheels attached to special rollers that record time, speed, and distance — though they never actually go anywhere.
