Quick history lesson for your unknowing ass: Oktoberfest began way back in 1810 with the marriage of Bavarian royals Princess Theresa and Prince Ludwig. The nonstop party lasted for days and was such a success that it became an annual celebration in Munich as well as a popular excuse for beer-fueled excess around the world.
That includes the Valley, as the annual Oktoberfest at Tempe Town Lake attracts thousands each year and features all the classics you’ve grown to love about the holiday: non-stop polka from folks in dirndls and lederhosen, beer tents where you can guzzle 22 different Bavarian brews, and miles and miles of German sausage. It also has some unique events, including a 5K fun run and even some wiener dog races to go with all das wienerschnitzel.
