With all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, you may have missed the new mural that went up earlier this month on the west-facing wall of Halo Piercing on Central and Camelback. The 43-foot-long work is the result of a collaboration between local artists Kristin Bauer and Emmett Potter.

Bauer and Potter, who are married, say they had collaborated on a piece only once before (for the Artcade show earlier this year). But the couple has a long-standing history of showing work together. Last spring, the two had a successful joint show at Modified Arts called “Mixed Messages.”
They say when Kimber Lanning approached them with the idea of creating a mural outside of Medlock Plaza, it was a no-brainer.

According to Bauer, the mural, which reads “meet me in the middle,” gives a nod to the artists’ collaborative process, to the physical location of the piece, and to the community focus of the local businesses in the area.
The feeling of community carried over to working on the piece as well. Bauer and Potter say working on the mural every day in public was a huge shift from working in the studio, in part, because of interactions with the public. “We had all different types of people coming up and talking to us about the work,” Potter says.
“It was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had as an artist,” says Bauer.
Both artists say they would love to continue doing more mural work in the future. In the meantime, make sure to stop by Medlock Plaza to check out the finished piece — it’s a treat.
