Claustrophobia and despair are no fun when it’s you experiencing them, but the claustrophobia and despair of Agnes White and Peter Evans are frequently a hoot in Tracy Letts’ play Bug, presented through Sunday, November 16, by Binary Theatre Company, the student production arm of the theater program at ASU Tempe’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. (Whew!)
The Lucille Lortel award-winning Bug predates the author’s Tony-winning August: Osage County by 11 years, and it feels like a precocious-but-disadvantaged-child version of the later sprawling epic — two frantic losers, occasionally joined by a third, meet in a ratty Oklahoma motel room. Drink, drugs, obsession, and violence abound. Somebody’s after Agnes, and somebody’s after Peter, but that doesn’t mean they’re safe alone together. And, according to Peter, there are little bugs everywhere.
It’s all very serious, and it’s all very funny — and itchy. Get your tickets for Sunday, November 9, at www.binarytheatre.org. Admission is $8, and the show starts at 2 p.m. at Prism Theatre, 970 East University Drive in Tempe.
