The slogan of the Valley of the Sun Juneteenth planning committee is “Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Future.”
Ugh.
Strangely, the same folks who cooked up that bland, Chamber of Commerce jingle are responsible for the kickin’ Valley of the Sun Juneteenth Celebration. The fest is family-friendly, true, but also genuinely cool, honoring the Civil War-era emancipation of the slaves with an African-American Marketplace, an old-school classic-car showcase, musical performances by 25-plus acts ranging in style from R&B to gospel to poetry to hip-hop, the “Underground Rail Road Journey” exhibit, and many notable guest speakers, none of whom we trust will utter anything remotely like “Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Future.”
