Not to scold, but — good God — if you aren’t watching Dan Harmon’s Community on NBC Thursdays, you are missing out on some of the best, smartest, weirdest television that’s out there. Hyper-self aware, undyingly meta-minded, and, lest we forget, funny, the sitcom features an ensemble of community college students whose leader is Jeff Winger, a disbarred lawyer and terminal ladies’ man played by Joel McHale.

McHale’s character brings brash cockiness and dry wit to his study group’s favorite library table. And it’s not unlike the personality he’s cultivated as host of the snarky celeb-mocking, reality-skewering E! news show The Soup.

But the comedian is more than good looks, a smartass attitude, and embarrassingly deep pop culture knowledge. His sketch-comedy background gives him a more grounded basis for his stand-up, which revolves largely around his family life and societal observations.
