In the summer, the lightless hours of the night are abuzz with activity in Phoenix and surrounding areas, the cover of night shielding all from the harshness of the sun. Valley artist Alexandra Bowers reverentially explores the desert rituals of the dark in her show “Before Dawn,” which opens Monday.
Bowers specializes in intricate burnings of figures of flora & fauna on wood. “Before Dawn” focuses on the nocturnal life surrounding the delicate cactus flower of the Night Cereus, which blooms on a single night in the summer.
“Before Dawn” is at Practical Art, 5070 North Central Avenue, through Wednesday, December 31. Admission is free. Hours on December 1 are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Visit www.practical-art.com or call 602-264-1414.
Mondays-Fridays, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Fri., Dec. 12, 7-9 p.m. Starts: Dec. 1. Continues through Dec. 31, 2014
