Might seem crazy, but a traditional Oktoberfest celebration begins in late September and lasts no less than 16 days. However, a single Tempe weekend in October will nicely serve the purpose of quaffing down the large quantities of beer for which the event is renowned.
The tradition dates back to 1810 and began with a festival celebrating Germany’s Crown Prince Ludwig marrying Princess Thereses of Saxe-Hidburghausen. Coinciding with the harvest time, this component of German life soon dominated Oktoberfest, and frequently grains harvested one year were consumed as beer the next. The Tempe Town Lake celebration — now in its 41st year — adds running races, live music, a carnival, kids zone, Weinermania (Dachshund races), brats (and other German-style munchies), and plenty of exceptional beer (much of it local) spread out over a handful of beer gardens.
