Halloween’s a richly complicated holiday that began when Samhain, a harvesty Gaelic fest, got mashed up with All Saints’ Day, the heavy-duty Catholic day of obligation, and its hangover, All Souls’ Day. As centuries passed, some Christian denominations started feeling ooky about how much the American Halloween seems to trivialize and celebrate evil. Heck, some Wiccans think it gives witches a bad name. As far as we can tell, the more fun you’re having, the more people you’re offending. Our head hurts.
One solution is to simply disregard what’s supposed to be honored and/or worshipped. Just scurry on down to Chyro Arts Venue for Halloween Lit III, an evening of creepy fiction and whatnot performed by cool local actor types and accompanied by Jeanette Young on spine-tingling keyboard.
