When it comes to exploring Phoenix’s rich cultural history, we’ll admit that we’re visual learners. Which is why we’ve found yet another reason to attend the 26th Annual Art Detour’s Art D’Core Gala on Saturday, March 1. The creative kickoff party will be hosted by Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, Downtown Phoenix Inc., and Artlink Inc. at Crescent Ballroom. Organizers have announced that, in addition to the live music, colorful attire, and a speech by the mayor, the event also will feature the unveiling of the Phoenix Phabulous History Mural to the community.

Produced by Phoenix Phabulous Experience and curated by artis and Artlink Inc. board member Hugo Medina, this collection of narrative murals aims to illustrate the past, present, and future of Phoenix.

To create the project, Medina turned to local artists Amanda Adkins, Anel Arriola, Angel Diaz, Jessica Eddings, Anthony Galto, Damian Jim, Lauren Lee, Jim McCarty, Seth Payson, Michael Pruitt, Lucretia Torva, and Katharine Leigh Simpson, as well as Phoenix-based historians and storytellers to depict nine pivotal time periods in the city’s cultural evolution.

These time periods include pre-1867 Hohokam civilization, mid- to late-19th-century Wild West pioneering, late-19th-century pre-statehood emergence, early-20th-century statehood and Phoenix expansion, post-World War II boom years, mid-century suburb expansion, late-20th-century emergence as part of the Southwest Metropolis, and present day revitalization with a focus on bioscience and higher education.

After debuting at the Art D’Core Gala on Saturday, March 1, at 6 p.m., the Phoenix Phabulous History Mural will be installed at the The Walter Gallery during Art Detour, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 8 and 9.

The mural then will travel to several prominent civic spaces before finding permanent installation in a yet-to-be-announced location. For more information or to RSVP for the free Art D’Core Gala, visit Artlink online.
