Pilobolus is hard to define. Yes, there are synchronized movements to music, but also the execution is mind blowing. Named after a quickly developing spore, Pilobolus often looks more like a kaleidoscope than a group of people performing. The troupe blossomed into a gorgeous display of movements in Ok Go’s video for “All is Not Lost.” It uses bodies to spell out words and cram into tight spaces. In fact, the group holds a world record for squeezing 26 people into a Mini Cooper in a very claustrophobic viral video. Pilobolus is also known for shadow dance (think using your whole body to create a shadow puppet and using dynamic moves to challenge the boundaries of perspective).
